This semester, CETL Associates Melissa McAllister and Erika Johnson-Lewis organized and facilitated the first SPC faculty book club. Together we read Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning by James. M Lang. Over 30 SPC faculty from a variety of disciplines participated in our weekly online discussion of the book. Lang’s text offers instructors useful teaching tools that can be easily implemented in a course at any time, giving the book club participants the ability to try out what they learned during the semester. Our conversations were lively as we shared insights and our plans for how we could implement Lang’s activities and suggestions into our courses. We will be having a drop-in meeting on January 10th in ES-105 from 12-2pm to have a wrap-up conversation before moving into the spring semester.
In response to participant feedback, we will be running the book club in the spring. We will be reading The Spark of Learning: Energizing the College Classroom with the Science of Emotion by Sarah Rose Cavanagh. CETL has purchased 20 copies of the book for the spring participants and we will meet three times during the spring semester for a series of brown bag lunch discussions of the book. Stay tuned for more information about how to sign-up for the spring session.
